The Economics Department of DBS (PG) College started in the year 1961 with a few students. The founder principal of the college, Late(Dr.)Mata Baksh Srivastava was a scholar of economics, and his contribution to the college and the Department was so immense that it cannot be simply penned down in words. The Post Graduate Classes of the Department of Economicsstarted in the year 1966.Late(Dr.) Mata Baksh Srivastava was the first Principal of the college and the Head of the Department of Economics. He was supported byeminent faculty members -Dr. M.W. Hanif, Shri Dinesh Chandra, Shri B. S. Verma and Shri Shiv Kumar. After Dr Mata Baksh Srivastava’s retirement in 1973, Dr.M. W. Hanif became the next Head of the Department.

In the first batch, the Department had 32 students. Dr.J. P Srivastava became the Head of the Department in 2001. The Department completed 50 years in 2016 and celebrated the year by organizing conferences, tours, field surveys, the inauguration of a board magazine called’ Social Scientist G’, a golden jubilee souvenir, a golden jubilee logo, organizing various competitions, debates, and discourses etc and invited Alumni of the Department to join in the celebration.

Dr. J. P. Srivastava and Shri. Dinesh Chandra Joined the department in 1973 and retired on the 30th June, 2006, and 30th June, 2003 respectively. Dr. Srivastava visited Michigan State and Connecticut State University, USA, to present his research papers. Eleven doctoral researches were completed under his supervision. Shri Dinesh Chandra was an econometrician and had a great contribution as a teacher not only in DBS but also in many other institutions in Dehradun.He was so popular as a teacher that Officers from ONGC and other institutions used to come to attend his classes with permission.Shri B. S. Verma retired in 2003 from the Economics Department. He had published many research papers and worked under different committees for upliftment of the college and the department.

Dr. Alka Suri joined the Economics Department of DBS (PG) College as an Assistant Professor on the 5th of August 2008. To date, she is serving as the Head of the Department and is an Associate Professor in the Department. She has presented many research papers and has a number of publications to her credit.Her area of specialization is Agricultural Economics and Gender Economics Dr Chetna Bisht joined the college on 24^th December 2013. Before DBS she had joined Government College of Uttarakhand through Public Service  Commission in the year 2005.She is presently serving as a Professor in the Department. She has presented and published many research papers. Her area of specialization is Public Finance and Labour Economics. Dr Rajlakshmi Datta joined the Department on 9^th January 2014. She has served the Department of Economics, HNB Garhwal Central University, and Doon University before joining here. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department. She has supervised three PhDs and her main area of research is Mountain Economy and Developmental Economics. Her area of specialization is Econometrics and Statistics.

The Department has produced many eminent Alumni including Dr. Bhupal Singh presently a renowned economist with the International Monetary Fund(IMF), Prof R P Mamgain, Former S.R. Sankaran Chair Professor (Rural Labour), NIRDPR, GoI,and presently the Head of Department of Economics, Doon University, Dr. Amita Verma(Sarkar), Dy Director General of CII, Mr.Reshab Raizada, VP, Reliance, Anjana Singh, Professor, Delhi University, G M Mustafa, Officer in the Indian Air Force,Shri Anant Pratap Singh, Senior Economist PNB, Shri Abhinav Chopra  IMC, Chamber of Commerce, Mumbai,Dr. Anil Dimri, Regional Director, IGNOU, Professor Shikha Nagalia Sharma, Department of Economics, DAV (PG) College, Dr. Tamal Sarkar, Director, MSME Cluster and a reputed Economist,Dr. Viswa Raman, Gold Medalist and a reputed Entrepreneur,Dr. Vineeta Kulshrestha,Associate Professor at UIET, Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, Kanpur, Ms Rekha Bhatt, a doctoral scholar at IIT Roorkee, Mr. Kartik whojoined IIM Shillong for MBA  after DBS and now working with YUBI (formerly Credavenue),  Mr Subham Kumar who joined Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics,Pune for doing MSc in Financial Economics after DBS and presently working with Delloite US. Many of the students from this Department are teaching at Government Colleges in Uttarakhand,Graphic Era Hill University, IMS Unison University,Doon University, and Universities in other states of India.
