DBS College was started in 1961
with Chemistry, Geology, Economics, Maths, English and Hindi at under graduate
level. Physics was introduced in this series in 1962. Dr. R. S. Srivastava
joined the college in 1963 as Head, Department of Physics. Four students
completed their Ph.D under his supervision.
The Department was upgraded to P.G.
level in 1969 (13.8.69) with specialization in solid state Physics). In 1981,
during the headship of Dr. R.S. Srivastava, by incessant efforts of
departmental faculty member viz Dr.G.K.Gupta, Dr. V.K.Bhatnagar, Dr. Ashok
Kumar, Dr. K. Sen, Dr. B.P.Tyagi, Dr. D.P.Joshi, Dr (Mrs.) V.Dikshit and Dr.
S.R.Verma, the electronics lab was started and specialization in Electronics
was granted by HNB Garhwal, University.
In 1994, Dr. G.K.Gupta took the
charge as Head of department (1994-2006). During his period a DST-FIST Grant of
Rs. 28,00,000/- was sanctioned to start a Laser & Photonics and Computer
Laboratories.
Dr. V.K.Bhatnagar later took over
the charge as head in 2006. During his tenure Laser lab was expanded with the
efforts of Dr. S.R.Verma, and Dr. (Mrs.) V. Dikshit. Dr. S.R.Verma took over
the charge as head in 2011. Many new experiments viz. Michelson interferometer,
velocity of Ultra-sonic waves, study of diffraction and interference by He-Ne
laser were added to the Laser Lab.
Dr. Roopesh Kumar took over the
charge as head in 2018. During his tenure B.Sc labs were upgraded as per the
CBCS and NEP curriculum. Smart class has been added to the department.
Thin film lab / ceramics lab has
been established in the department by Dr. Vindesh Dwivedi and Dr. Saurabh Kumar
Srivastava. Dr. Saurabh Kumar Srivastava has been awarded DST TARE (Teachers
Associateship for Research Excellence) project during 2018 to 2021.
When the department was raised to
PG level the number of teaching faculty was nine, which included Dr. R. S. Srivastava,
Dr. K. N. Bhatnagar (who later qualified I.A.S.), Dr. V. K. Goyal (Presently at
Kurukshetra University), Dr. G. K. Gupta (Retd. as HOD, Physics, Graphic Era
University); Dr. Ashok Kumar (later became Principal, DAV (PG) College,
Dehradun), Dr.V. K. Bhatnagar, Sh. R. K. Sharma (Retd. as Chief commissioner
Income Tax), Dr. K. Sen, Dr. B. P. Tyagi followed by Dr. D.P.Joshi (Retd. as
Chairman, Uttarakhand Public Service Commission).
Currently the number of teaching
faculty is five, which includes Dr. Roopesh Kumar, Mr. Arvind Kumar, Dr.
Aradhana Sharma, Dr. Vindesh Kumar Dwivedi and Dr. Saurabh Kumar Srivastava.
It is a matter of great pleasure that under the able supervision of our erudite faculty members more than 20 Ph.D. degrees have been awarded and about 150 research papers have been published in reputed National as well as International Journals. Around 25 books have been authored by faculty members of the department.
Finally the physics department owes its gratitude to Mr. K.N. Ghosh (Sr. Tech. Asst), Shri Sanjeev Sharma (Lab Astt), Shri P.N. Tiwari, Shri Chhoteram Tiwari, Shri Vikas Sharma, Shri Maheshanand and Shri Upendra Gairola. The Department could not have performed well without their tireless efforts and zeal.
