Our teaching programs have been conceptualized with an aim to develop systematic and comparative approaches to the analysis of social phenomena. Drawing upon the extant Rural and Industrial Sociology and sociological perspectives and combining them with interdisciplinary orientations facilitate such approaches. Our commitment to the principles of diversity and inter-disciplinarity is reflected in the manner our teaching and research programs are designed and implemented. Inter-disciplinarity, especially, is expanded further with increased optional courses such as those on culture studies, psychoanalyses, Indian social thought and gender-studies.Presently Department is headed by Dr.Paritosh Singh.   

Sociology department was introduced to fulfill the obligation of Social Responsibility and self development as an optional subject in order to get a Graduation degree.The founder Head of the Dept.was Late Smt. Savita Bhargava (1966 to 1993) further the Department was being headed by Dr K.S. Randhawa (1994 to 2010). Earlier, this subject was opted by both science and arts stream students but now it is for Humanities only. There are around 530 students in the Department at the graduate level. The Sociology Department started new teaching methods to improve student learning like audio visual presentations, mini projects and assignments, remedial classes for slow learners,participation in ISR [Institutional Social Responsibility] and extension activities.
