The Department started since 1961 with the Undergraduate
programme and was upgraded to the level of Post Graduate and Ph.D. Programme in
1984. However, the laboratory was approved for Ph.D. work even when it was
running graduate classes in the year 1978 as Dr. T. Singh was approved by the
Garhwal University as research guide. The Department was initiated with Dr. P.C. Jain as Head.
Successively other members namely Mr. Dhirendra Singh, Dr. R.P. Chaturvedi, Dr.
S.P. Singh, Dr. S.K. Beri, Mr. Bahadur, Dr. K.B. Srivastava, Dr. S.K. Gupta,
Dr. S.F. Hasan and Dr. (Smt.) S. Bhatnagar joined the Department and they all
have retired. Presently the faculty consists of Dr. N. Pemola Devi, Dr. Poonam
Prabha Semwal and Dr. Manisha Uniyal and Dr. N. Pemola Devi is leading the
Department as HOD. Field of Ph.D./D.Phil. and other research: The Department has well equipped separate laboratories for
undergraduate and post graduate levels and also for carrying out dissertation,
project and research work. Presently the student strength of B.Sc. is 350 and
M.Sc. 20. In recent past years, many post graduate students have cleared
National and State competitive examinations such as NET, SLET, GATE, Civil
Services, Defense Services, etc Since 1978 research projects have been sanctioned to the
Department. Keeping in mind, due to research and teaching activities, the
Department has been sanctioned Post Graduate Development Grant thrice by the
U.G.C. The Department has produced Ph.D. students in the field of Environmental
Science, Reproductive Biology, Toxicology, Helminthology, Ichthyology and
Entomology. More than two hundred and fifty research papers have been published
in National and International reputed journals. 5 books, 3 Edited books and
more than 15 chapters in books have been published in the past from the
Department. The Department has received research grants for major and
minor research projects from various funding agencies such as UGC, DST, UCOST
and ICMR on various fields such as Toxicology, Behaviour Ecology, Population
Ecology, Resource Mapping, Environmental Physiology, Reproductive Biology,
Biodiversity of vectors and parasites and Ichthyology. Many National Seminars /
Conference / workshops have been organized by the Department and the faculty
members have also been actively engaged in collaborative programme with other
institutes / agencies. Some of faculty members and research scholars have been
honored by conferring National and State level Awards of for their research
contributions by various bodies and agencies. Our alumni are well placed and serving the society. Many
eminent doctors of Dehradun are our alumni. Some of them are serving as
Professors, Post Graduate Trained Teachers, Scientists, Defense services,
serving in India and abroad. The department is seen with admiration within the zoological
fraternity of the University, State and abroad. The Department is committed to
continue good work in teaching, research and for social causes in the field of
environmental protection. |
